Macron on Taiwan: Europe should not follow China or US

French President commented on the geopolitical situation in interviews and called for more independence.

According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Europe should pursue its own strategy in the case of Taiwan. “The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans will become followers on this issue and have to follow either the American style or a Chinese overreaction,” the magazine quoted him as saying Politico.

Europe should not contribute to the escalation of the conflict, but pursue its own position as the third pole between the US and China, Macron said in an interview Politico and the French newspaper The echoes during his three-day visit to China this week.

China regards the democratically governed Taiwan as its territory. On Saturday, China launched a military exercise around the island in response to a visit to the United States by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
